PCem or 86Box and Windows for Workgroups 3.11
Learned lots of things about PCem today, but the rundown is this; To get a resolution higher than 800×600 with 16-bit color in Windows for Workgroups 3.11 you want to use the S3 Trio 64 video card set to 4MB RAM. Here is a link to the Windows 3.1 driver for the s3trio64. You’ll also need the ROM since it doesn’t come with PCem, so here is the ROM along with a bunch of others that can be used with PCem or 86Box – ROMS
Another interesting thing I learned is that the 8 disk version of WfW 3.11 doesn’t have all the files needed to setup networking. I found a 9 disk version that has all the goodies, in particular the wfwnetcp.cpx file. Here’s a link to Windows for Workgroups 3.11 (9 Disk Version).
Also found a REALLY nice file manager for DOS called Doszip Commander. The reason it’s so nice is because it only uses a little over 200K of memory and has ZIP archive functionality built in. This small memory footprint works great when using Microsoft Network Client 3.0 for DOS to copy files between a network share and the local hard drive. Here’s the latest version I could find as of 5/7/2018 – Doszip Commander 3.54.
